Honoring Heroes: Israel’s Naval Commandos Pay Tribute to Fallen Brethren

In a moving display of remembrance and unity, the Israeli Navy’s elite Shayetet 13 commando unit held its annual “Running for their Memory” event this week, commemorating the 85 members who have fallen in the line of duty while defending their nation.

The run took place on the eve of Israel’s National Memorial Day (Yom HaZikaron), observed each year on the day before Independence Day. Over 200 marines participated in the 12 km (8 mile) route, which started at the Naval Commando base in Atlit. This year, for the first time, reservists of the unit also joined in the tribute.

At one point during the run, participants read aloud the names of their fallen comrades and laid wreaths in their memory. The commander of the 13th Fleet, Col. A., emphasized the importance of remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the defense and freedom of Israel.

He also highlighted the tremendous responsibility that Shayetet 13 members carry as fighters and commanders, stating, “We must…do whatever is required, in battle and routine, to be united and rise above any controversy, in order to maintain the security and resilience of our wonderful country.”

The annual “Running for their Memory” event is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Israel’s Naval Commandos and the unwavering dedication they have to their nation’s security. By honoring their fallen brethren, the Shayetet 13 exemplifies the values of unity, strength, and resilience that are at the heart of the State of Israel. This spirit of togetherness and devotion to their country is a testament to the character of the Israeli people, and it’s what makes Israel a truly remarkable nation.
