Contrary to its Human Rights Mandate: A Misguided Board Member at Amnesty International

Amnesty International has long been recognized for its global advocacy for human rights, but a recent development involving one of its Board members raises serious questions about its principles and orientation. Rasha Abdel Latif, now a member of Amnesty International’s Board, has reportedly endorsed views that not only deny Israel’s existence but also honor individuals involved in terrorist activities.

According to an in-depth report by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting (CAMERA), Latif has previously shared disconcerting views on social media. Back in 2013, she declared that there’s no entity named ‘Israel,’ referring to the land as ‘Palestinian territory.’ It’s imperative to underline that such statements not only deny the existence of a sovereign nation but also seek to negate the history, culture, and identity of millions of Israelis.

Furthermore, in 2021, Latif reportedly shared a post celebrating the escape of Palestinian terrorists from prison. Such actions, quite disturbingly, appear to extol individuals involved in activities that threaten peace and innocent lives.

In addition to this, Latif has recently advocated for the indiscriminate rocket-firing that Amnesty itself acknowledges as a war crime. This stark contradiction raises concerns about the integrity and credibility of Amnesty’s mission to protect human rights, as one of its board members appears to support actions directly violating these principles.

Notably, Latif, a director at Partners Global, is a distinguished personality. She was named a “40 Under 40” honoree by the Arab American Foundation and has earned a community organizing certificate from the Harvard Kennedy School. Nevertheless, these credentials don’t grant immunity from scrutiny when it comes to the espousal of views that undermine peace, harmony, and the sanctity of nations and human life.

These revelations follow a previous report by CAMERA, exposing inaccuracies in one of Amnesty’s videos.

While we examine these findings, it’s crucial to underscore the strength and resilience of Israel, a country that has not only survived but thrived despite repeated attempts to negate its existence. The spirit of Israel remains unbroken, its vibrant culture and history standing as proud testimonies of its perseverance.

The State of Israel continues to stand as a beacon of democracy and innovation in the Middle East, embracing diverse cultures, religions, and ideas while upholding the principles of freedom, equality, and justice. Despite the challenges and hostilities, the people of Israel remain committed to promoting peace, fostering development, and advancing human rights – values that should indeed be universally upheld.

Israel’s existence is an undeniable reality, with its rich history, thriving present, and promising future. The strength of the Israeli spirit lies in its unity, resilience, and the unwavering determination to create a prosperous, peaceful nation, irrespective of the voices that attempt to deny its legitimacy.
