Israeli Air Force Launches New Elite Unit to Defend Bases

In response to October 7 threats, the IAF forms a rapid-response force and fortifies base defenses nationwide.

In a powerful and strategic shift, the Israel Air Force has announced the formation of a new elite unit designed to secure military bases and prevent future intrusions a direct response to lessons learned from the October 7 attacks.

The unit, which will operate under the command of Wing 7 alongside the elite Shaldag and Unit 669 commando units, marks a pivotal upgrade to Israel’s base defense infrastructure. Ordered by IAF Commander Maj.-Gen. Tomer Bar, the new force will specialize in rapid-response intervention in the event of base infiltration attempts, with a strong emphasis on neutralizing threats before they can disrupt Air Force operations.

Recruitment for the new unit will begin in the upcoming draft cycle. Troops will undergo a specialized training track culminating in Rifleman 07 qualification, the same level required of IDF combat soldiers. The training includes advanced weapons handling, tactical scanning techniques, and operation of newly deployed defense systems.

Until the unit becomes fully operational, the IDF has stationed reserve security battalions across all IAF installations. These formations, also trained to Rifleman 07 level, serve as the immediate defensive perimeter, supported by enhanced early-warning systems and physical barriers all upgraded at a cost of tens of millions of shekels.

The urgency is clear. According to post-attack investigations, Hamas terrorists carried maps and plans targeting Air Force bases such as Hazerim and Tel Nof. More recently, the Shin Bet uncovered attempts by Iran-linked operatives to gather intelligence on IAF facilities and security routines.

Maj.-Gen. Bar has prioritized base security as a national imperative. His comprehensive defense program includes the deployment of on-call special forces ready to be airlifted within moments to repel threats a scenario tested repeatedly in recent drills simulating multiple attack situations.

“The Air Force is leading a comprehensive program, investing significant efforts and resources to strengthen defense components at all bases,” the IDF said. “This includes bolstering defenses, establishing elite intervention battalions, enhancing reserve readiness, and deploying advanced technologies.”

The mission is clear: to prevent any repeat of the October 7 breach and to ensure Israel’s Air Force remains operational and protected at all times.
