Alon Leichman Named MLB’s First Israeli Head Pitching Coach
Colorado Rockies name Team Israel veteran as pitching lead.

Alon Leichman has been named head pitching coach for the Colorado Rockies, making him the first Israeli to hold such a position in Major League Baseball.
Leichman, who grew up on Kibbutz Gezer, was introduced to baseball by his father on a field built in their community. He most recently served as assistant pitching coach for the Miami Marlins, and before that, spent two years with the Cincinnati Reds.
He is also a veteran of Team Israel, having played and coached in international competitions, including as bullpen coach during the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He is expected to return as head pitching coach for Israel in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
The Rockies announced that Gabe Ribas will serve as assistant pitching coach and Matt Buschmann as bullpen coach alongside Leichman. “We’re going to enjoy these few days, answer phone calls, call players, say our ‘thank yous’ and get to work,” Leichman said.
The news came as Leichman traveled back to Israel to celebrate his wedding with family. In a social media post, he thanked the Marlins and expressed excitement about the opportunity in Colorado.
His historic appointment follows that of Assaf Lowengart, who became the first Israeli-born position player to sign a pro contract in the U.S. earlier this year. Share this article or subscribe to our newsletter for updates.
