Stunning Abbasid Era Bowl Unearthed by Volunteer in Israel

In a remarkable find that underscores the rich tapestry of Israel's historical landscape, a volunteer recently unearthed a vibrantly decorated bowl from the Abbasid period during an archaeological dig near Rehovot. This discovery at Khirbet Hevra, dating back to the 9th or 10th century, provides a fascinating glimpse into the artistic and cultural life of the region during the early Islamic era.

The bowl, discovered by Meir Elchassid, a local volunteer from Rehovot, features colorful patterns and intricate designs that highlight the artistic prowess of the Abbasid period. The craftsmanship has captured the attention of archaeologists and historians, showcasing a high level of artistic and functional ingenuity of the time.

Itamar Taxel, an archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and the surveyor of the site, provided insights into the bowl's significance. "In Israel, the pentagram is recognized as an artistic-magical motif common during the Islamic periods," Taxel noted. He also pointed out the evidence of ancient repair efforts on the bowl, such as drilled holes and traces of metal wires or lead used to mend the artifact in antiquity, highlighting the value ancient inhabitants placed on this object.

The find was made during a community archaeological dig, part of a broader initiative by the Brenner Regional Council in cooperation with the IAA. The project, now in its second season, aims to engage local communities in uncovering and preserving their cultural heritage. Gilad Stern, the community coordinator from the IAA, emphasized the importance of public participation. "We encourage all adults to join us in this exciting exploration. Every day brings new and impressive discoveries," Stern remarked.
