Police Recover Ancient Coins, Stolen Medical Equipment in East Jerusalem

Byzantine, Roman, and Islamic-era coins recovered alongside stolen oxygen concentrator during search of 61-year-old suspect’s home.

In a rare blend of archaeology and crime-fighting, Israel Police uncovered a trove of ancient coins and a stolen medical device during a raid on the home of a 61-year-old resident of east Jerusalem on Sunday.

The suspect was arrested after refusing to comply with police instructions, prompting authorities to search his home. There, officers discovered several coins later confirmed by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) to be of significant historical and cultural importance.

The artifacts include a coin from the Byzantine era, an ancient Islamic coin, and a Roman coin dating back to the reign of Emperor Vespasian, who ruled in the first century CE. These coins, now in the custody of the state, offer a glimpse into the layered civilizations that once inhabited Jerusalem and its surroundings.

“This is not just about criminal activity,” an IAA spokesperson noted. “These coins are a direct link to the heritage of this land. Recovering them is a win for Israeli history.”

In addition to the ancient finds, police also uncovered a stolen oxygen concentrator an essential medical device valued at approximately NIS 12,000. Officers were able to identify and return the device to its rightful owner, providing swift restitution in what could have been a life-threatening situation.

The suspect has been taken to the Lev Habira police station for further questioning as the investigation continues.

This case highlights the intersection of cultural preservation and modern law enforcement, as Israeli authorities work to protect not only public safety but also the nation's rich archaeological heritage from theft and trafficking.
