Argentina and Israel Celebrate 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations in Jerusalem

Unprecedented friendship under President Milei strengthens bonds and shared values.

Israel and Argentina commemorated 75 years of diplomatic relations on Monday at a gala event hosted by the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem. Under the leadership of Argentinian President Javier Milei, the relationship between the two nations has reached unprecedented heights, characterized by shared values and steadfast support.

During the event, participants called for the immediate release of hostages still held by Hamas, including Argentinian nationals. Argentinian Ambassador to Israel, Rabbi Axel Wahnish, delivered written remarks from President Milei, who reaffirmed his country’s commitment to combating Islamic terrorism. “Silence is complicity,” Milei wrote, emphasizing Argentina’s vocal support for Israel on the global stage.

Milei, who took office in late 2023, has prioritized strengthening Argentina’s ties with Israel, declaring the relationship a cornerstone of shared values such as freedom and democracy. He has pledged to move Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem, underscoring his nation’s unwavering solidarity.

“Argentina was the first Latin American country to recognize the State of Israel,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog noted during the event. “Now, under the leadership of my dear friend Javier Milei, there is no doubt that ties have become stronger than ever.”

Rabbi Wahnish, reflecting on Argentina’s evolution in its relationship with Israel, remarked, “Argentina was for 74 years a partner, but now, in its 75th year, under President Milei, Argentina has become a friend to Israel.” Wahnish has developed a personal connection with the libertarian Argentinian leader, who has shown a deep interest in Judaism despite being Catholic.

Milei’s leadership has drawn global attention, especially for his strong stance against terrorism. He officially designated Hamas as a terrorist organization, condemned Iran’s involvement in terrorism, and visited southern Israeli communities affected by the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, whose father emigrated from Argentina nearly six decades ago, celebrated the strengthened ties, announcing plans to lead a private-sector delegation to Argentina in March to foster further economic collaboration. Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana echoed these sentiments, noting, “The bond between Argentina and Israel has never been stronger.”

As Argentina continues its recovery from a prolonged economic crisis, the enduring friendship between these two nations offers a beacon of hope and mutual prosperity.
