Argentina's President Javier Milei Receives Prestigious Jewish Nobel Prize
Milei honored for his unwavering support of Israel and commitment to fighting antisemitism.
Argentinian President Javier Milei has been awarded the 2025 Genesis Prize, often referred to as the “Jewish Nobel Prize,” in recognition of his strong support for Israel and the Jewish people.
“President Milei is a true hero of the Jewish people,” said Stan Polovets, co-founder and chairman of the Genesis Prize Foundation. “Unlike leaders of many other countries who either remained quiet, pressured, or in some cases sanctioned Israel, President Milei has unequivocally supported the Jewish people and their state.”
Milei is the first head of state to receive the prestigious $1 million award, which all past honorees have donated. True to tradition, Milei announced that he would contribute the prize money to causes that promote freedom and combat antisemitism, both in Argentina and globally.
“I have deep admiration for Israel, its history, and its people,” Milei stated. “The Jewish people have shown throughout their history that the defense of freedom is essential to overcoming any challenge.”
Milei’s personal connection to Judaism has deepened in recent years. Though raised Catholic, he has embraced Jewish teachings since 2021, regularly studies Torah, attends prayer services, and has expressed his intention to convert to Judaism after leaving office. His cabinet meetings often begin with discussions of the weekly Torah portion, and he has appointed his rabbi, Axel Wahnish, as Argentina’s ambassador to Israel.
Since taking office, Milei has taken concrete steps to strengthen Argentina-Israel relations. He announced the relocation of Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem, designated Hamas as a terrorist organization, and sought an arrest warrant for Iran’s interior minister over alleged involvement in the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires.
Danny Danon, Israel’s envoy to the UN, congratulated Milei, calling him a “close friend and ally.” B’nai B’rith International also praised the decision, stating it was a “well-deserved honor” for Milei’s steadfast support of Israel, particularly in the wake of the October 7 attacks.
Milei’s outspoken defense of Israel has made him one of the Jewish state’s strongest international allies. As he continues to lead Argentina, his commitment to Israel and the Jewish people remains a defining element of his presidency.
