Ashkelon College Opens Year Honoring Trump and IDF
Students celebrate U.S.-Israel ties and pay tribute to soldiers amid renewed ceasefire hopes.

Ashkelon Academic College ushered in the new academic year with a bold celebration, honoring both IDF soldiers and former U.S. President Donald Trump. The festivities, held as Israel enters a fragile ceasefire period with Hamas, reflect a spirit of gratitude and resilience from a campus that has long stood at the frontlines.
Throughout the week, the college campus has transformed into a festive scene with food stands, music, and themed displays paying tribute to iconic American locations New York, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Hollywood, and Texas. The event, organized by the Student Association, was designed to spotlight the enduring alliance between the United States and Israel, particularly in light of Trump’s efforts in securing the return of Israeli hostages and pushing for the ceasefire.
“This is a tribute to our great friend across the ocean,” said Student Association Chairman Meir Katz. “After a challenging period, we chose to return to routine with high energy and optimism.” He noted that many students had recently returned from reserve duty, making the transition back to academic life especially meaningful.
The celebration also recognized the IDF soldiers who continue to defend Israel’s borders and uphold the fragile ceasefire with Hamas. Just last week, that ceasefire was shaken after Hamas violated the agreement, leading to the deaths of two Israeli soldiers and the serious injury of another. In response, the IDF carried out a series of strategic strikes against Hamas targets as a reminder of Israel’s red lines.
Israeli officials have since issued stern warnings to Hamas to release the remains of hostages still held in Gaza. Trump reportedly gave Hamas a 48-hour ultimatum to make progress on this front an unusually direct and forceful intervention from a world leader that continues to resonate across Israeli society.
As Israel and its allies explore long-term governance strategies for Gaza potentially involving Hamas in limited municipal roles the sense of transition is palpable. In this context, Ashkelon College’s tribute is more than a festive opening to the school year. It’s a cultural statement about solidarity, appreciation, and the enduring bond between the U.S. and Israel.
The scenes at Ashkelon are a reminder of how deeply intertwined education, national service, and international diplomacy are in Israeli life. While the challenges remain vast, so does the determination of Israel’s youth to press forward, supported by allies and driven by a shared commitment to peace and strength.
