Austin Commends Gallant While Netanyahu Prepares to Fire Defense Minister – US Source
US Expresses Support for Gallant as Political Turmoil Brews in Israel.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has publicly praised Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for the "stability and judgment he brings to the US-Israel relationship," according to a senior US Department of Defense official. Austin expressed his appreciation for the trust and open dialogue maintained with Gallant, signaling strong support from the Biden administration amid political unrest in Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly planning to dismiss Gallant, a move that has sparked concern within both Israeli and American circles. A senior US official, addressing the situation, told Walla: "Firing an experienced defense minister like Gallant in the middle of a war in Gaza and possibly before a war in Lebanon would be a crazy move."
The US administration’s decision to make its stance public underscores Washington's desire for Gallant to remain in his position, particularly as Israel navigates ongoing conflicts.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu has been negotiating with Gideon Sa’ar regarding potential ministerial positions in the government. Talks have focused on Sa’ar’s return to the Likud party, with two high-ranking slots reserved for him in future elections. Elkin, another key player in these negotiations, is expected to take up a new role, possibly as North Minister.
The agreement under discussion includes a significant clause: Sa’ar would have veto power over any legislative moves related to the controversial judicial overhaul. This veto power would prevent further steps on the overhaul without unanimous coalition consent, giving Sa’ar a crucial role in shaping Israel’s judicial future.
