Royal Commission Launched in Australia Following Bondi Beach Shooting

After public outcry, the Australian government launches a top-level inquiry into the terror shooting that claimed 15 lives during a Chanukah celebration.

In a long-awaited move, the Australian government has announced the launch of a royal commission into the horrific December 14 terrorist attack that unfolded during a Chanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, Sydney. The attack, which left 15 dead and dozens injured, was carried out by a father and son inspired by Islamic State ideology. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the inquiry on Thursday, pledging to prioritize unity and healing across the nation.

The attack shocked the country and the Jewish world. That it occurred during a joyful Jewish festival in one of Australia’s most iconic public spaces made the horror all the more chilling. From the outset, Jewish leaders called for more than condolences; they demanded accountability and decisive government action. Now, their calls have been answered.

"This is the only way that Australia’s time-honored standards of decency and fairness can be upheld,” said Daniel Aghion KC, president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. The organization welcomed the royal commission, expressing a firm commitment to participate fully and to ensure that the voices of those affected by antisemitism are heard loud and clear.

The commission will be led by Justice Virginia Bell, and its scope will extend far beyond the events of that single day. It aims to uncover the ideological, political, and religious extremism that fueled the attack and to evaluate the readiness of government, law enforcement, and other institutions in responding to rising antisemitism.

Robert Gregory, CEO of the Australian Jewish Association, emphasized the importance of this moment. “The commission must examine the sharp rise in antisemitism since October 7, the spread of Islamic extremism in Australia, and the many warnings issued prior to this tragedy,” he said. He underscored that while the inquiry is a necessary step, its success will depend on meaningful accountability and reform.

The royal commission marks a major shift in the government’s stance. Prime Minister Albanese had initially resisted calls for such an investigation, citing concerns over the timeline. However, after meeting with Jewish leaders and grieving families, he reversed course. “I’ve taken time to reflect,” Albanese said, “and most importantly, to speak with families of victims and survivors of that horrific attack.”

An earlier independent review of law enforcement agencies tasked with examining whether authorities missed warning signs will now be absorbed into the broader royal commission. The inquiry is expected to deliver its findings by April.

This investigation carries significance not just for Australia, but for every democracy grappling with rising antisemitism and the threats posed by extremist ideologies. It affirms that when innocent lives are lost to hate, silence and delay are not options.

At this moment of deep mourning and national reckoning, Israel stands in solidarity with Australian Jewry and all those demanding truth and justice.
