Australia Jewish Chanukah Celebration Targeted in Deadly Shooting
Tragedy strikes Sydney’s Bondi Beach as gunmen attack a Chabad Chanukah event, killing at least 11 and injuring many more.

The world watched in shock as a joyous Chanukah celebration in Sydney, Australia, turned into a scene of horror. What was meant to be a family‑friendly event by the sea became a mass‑casualty terror attack that has shaken Jewish communities worldwide.
On Sunday evening, as thousands gathered near Bondi Park for a Chabad‑organized celebration, gunfire erupted. The joyful gathering to light Chanukah candles and share in community spirit was shattered when multiple attackers opened fire near the northern end of Bondi Beach. At least 11 people were killed and dozens more wounded, with several in critical condition, according to emergency officials.
Witnesses described a terrifying ambush during a public address, when shots rang out from various directions, including from an elevated pedestrian bridge. Families with children scrambled for safety as loud blasts echoed across the beach. In harrowing footage from the scene, an unarmed bystander bravely confronted one of the gunmen, wrested his weapon away, and held him at gunpoint until police arrived. Other clips showed attackers firing upon the crowd from above.
Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a devoted Chabad emissary in Sydney, was among those murdered. His loss is felt deeply by the community he served with warmth and dedication.
Emergency responders rushed 13 victims to hospitals, battling overwhelming injuries. Police confirmed multiple fatalities and said more victims might be discovered as the full scope of the attack is assessed. Two suspects were taken into custody, and authorities reported additional shooters had been neutralized during the confrontation.
Jewish community members expressed that this nightmare reflects mounting fears they have voiced for months amid rising antisemitism in Australia. What was supposed to be a peaceful festival celebrating light and hope instead became a stark reminder of the dangers Jewish people face simply for practicing their faith publicly.
Australian authorities urged residents to shelter in place and follow instructions as a large‑scale police operation continued into the night. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s office stated the government is coordinating with state officials to manage the aftermath and ensure public safety.
Leaders around the world condemned the attack. In Jerusalem, President Isaac Herzog extended heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the Jewish families affected in Sydney. He underscored the urgency of confronting antisemitism and protecting Jewish communities everywhere.
In the wake of the violence, a planned Chanukah event in Melbourne was canceled as a precaution while threats are assessed. Despite fear and mourning, Jewish communities globally are rallying together, standing firm in faith and unity.
