Australia’s Opposition Vows to Reverse Palestine Recognition if Government Changes
Liberal Party leader Sussan Ley tells FM Gideon Sa’ar that recognition rewards Hamas and undermines peace efforts.

Australia’s recognition of a Palestinian state may not be permanent. Sussan Ley, leader of Australia’s Liberal Party and head of the opposition, told Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Monday that her party would reverse the decision if it comes to power.
Ley said she was “deeply disappointed” by the government’s move, which she argued breaks bipartisan consensus and “rewards Hamas” at a time when hostages remain in captivity and war continues in Gaza. “Recognition must only come at the end of a genuine two-state process,” she wrote in a post on X.
She also voiced concerns on behalf of Australia’s Jewish community amid rising antisemitism, while acknowledging the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Ley expressed hope that the remaining 48 hostages held by Hamas would be freed and that the fighting could be brought to an end.
Sa’ar welcomed Ley’s remarks, saying he appreciated her stance and invited her to visit Israel. He noted that Israel is working to ensure the continued flow of humanitarian aid while keeping pressure on Hamas. “Israel is well aware of the many friends it has in Australia and distinguishes between the government and the people of Australia,” Sa’ar added.
The opposition leader’s comments came just one day after Australia, Canada, and the UK jointly recognized a Palestinian state, with Portugal announcing its recognition shortly afterward.
Israel’s government sharply condemned the decision, calling it “an absurd reward for terrorism” and promising a response “in the coming days.”
For Jerusalem, Ley’s assurances highlight that Israel retains strong backing among Australia’s political class even as recognition debates test old alliances and reshape international diplomacy.
