Israel Soccer Team Welcomes Oct. 7 Survivor, Fulfilling 11-Year-Old’s Dream
Emotional meeting with soccer heroes offers hope to young survivor of Hamas attack.
In a heartwarming gesture, Beitar Jerusalem soccer club hosted 11-year-old Yoav Roditi, a survivor of Hamas’s devastating October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel. Roditi, who endured a harrowing 10-hour ordeal in a safe room during the assault on the town of Yakhini, had his dream come true when he met his sports idols, marking a hopeful step in his recovery journey.
The special meeting was organized by Youth Futures, a Jewish Agency program dedicated to supporting at-risk youth across Israel. Operating in about 50 communities since 2006, Youth Futures employs intensive mentorship programs to help children and families in Israel’s social and geographic periphery.
Yoav’s visit was particularly meaningful. During the Oct. 7 attack, he witnessed the tragic death of his cousin Yonatan, who succumbed to chest wounds while the family hid in their shelter. Despite the trauma, Yoav expressed joy after meeting his heroes: “Meeting all the players, getting hugs, taking pictures, and having them sign my shirt was a dream come true.”
Accompanied by his mentor, Gali, who has supported his family since the attack, Yoav was welcomed warmly by Beitar Jerusalem’s players and staff. The club reaffirmed its commitment to community initiatives in the wake of the Hamas attacks, noting, “It was our privilege to host Yoav and bring a smile to his face, creating joyful moments he will cherish forever.”
Ruti Shinfield, CEO of Youth Futures, highlighted the transformative power of such experiences. “Seeing his eyes sparkle with excitement as he met his heroes that’s the heart of our mission. These encounters provide not just unforgettable memories but also a renewed sense of security and belief that anything is possible.”
Beitar Jerusalem, along with other Israeli soccer clubs, has made significant efforts to honor victims and survivors of the attacks. These include memorial ceremonies and initiatives such as the creation of a soccer club by the TribeofNova non-profit organization, which supports survivors and families affected by the Nova music festival massacre.
Amid unimaginable pain and loss, gestures like these underscore the power of sports to inspire hope, resilience, and unity.
