Bennett Calls Netanyahu’s Qatar Scandal the Worst Treason in Israeli History
As Qatargate unfolds, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett demands Netanyahu’s resignation over alleged collaboration with a Hamas-supporting regime.

A political firestorm erupted in Israel this week as former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett accused the current government of betrayal at the highest level, calling the unfolding “Qatargate” scandal the most serious act of treason in the country’s history. The controversy centers on reports that top aides to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received funds from Qatar, a state known to host Hamas leaders and fund the terror organization.
Bennett did not mince words in a fiery social media statement: “Netanyahu’s office betrayed the State of Israel and IDF soldiers in wartime, and acted on Qatar’s behalf out of greed.” He added that whether Netanyahu was aware of his aides’ actions or not, “both scenarios require his immediate resignation.”
The scandal first came to light after two senior aides to Netanyahu were arrested in March 2025, with allegations that they had not only accepted financial gifts from Qatari officials but had also shared sensitive information regarding the war in Gaza. One of the aides was reportedly responsible for disseminating pro-Qatar narratives within Israel, allegedly acting under instruction to improve Doha’s image during a time of war.
These revelations are especially explosive given Qatar’s ongoing ties with Hamas, the group responsible for the October 7 massacre that ignited the current conflict. Though Qatar has served as a mediator between Israel and Hamas, it has never maintained official diplomatic relations with Jerusalem and continues to provide a haven for Hamas leadership.
In a move that raised further eyebrows, Netanyahu defended Qatar, stating the country is “not an enemy” of Israel. Bennett and others in the political opposition reacted strongly, viewing the statement as part of a broader attempt to downplay or deflect from the gravity of the scandal.
Yair Lapid, another former prime minister and prominent opposition leader, echoed Bennett’s sentiments, calling it “the most serious treason case in the history of the State.” Both men, once rivals, appear united in their demand for accountability.
As the investigation deepens and the national debate intensifies, public support appears to be shifting. Recent polls suggest Bennett, who stepped away from politics in 2022, is now the strongest contender to challenge Netanyahu in the next election. With Israelis increasingly questioning the integrity of the current leadership amid wartime, the stakes could not be higher.
In a nation that places immense value on unity and loyalty especially during conflict—any hint of betrayal is not just political fodder; it's a matter of national identity. As Israelis look toward the future, they are also demanding clarity, truth, and leadership that stands firmly with the people and the IDF.
