U.S. to Supply Israel with $8 Billion in Arms, Biden Tells Congress
Proposed Sale Includes Fighter Jet Munitions, Artillery Shells, and Precision Bombs.
The Biden administration has informed Congress of an $8 billion arms deal with Israel, aiming to finalize the agreement before President Joe Biden leaves office on January 20. The proposed sale includes critical military supplies such as munitions for fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery, reinforcing U.S. support for Israel’s security.
According to reports, the State Department has informally notified lawmakers about the deal, which includes AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, Hellfire AGM-114 missiles, 155mm artillery shells, small diameter bombs, and JDAM kits that convert conventional bombs into precision-guided munitions. The package is designed to replenish Israel’s stockpile and bolster its air defense systems.
“The president has made clear Israel has a right to defend its citizens, consistent with international law and international humanitarian law, and to deter aggression from Iran and its proxy organizations,” a U.S. official stated.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Jerusalem over the handling of the war in Gaza. While the U.S. has provided substantial military aid, Israeli leaders have publicly criticized delays in weapons deliveries. In June, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the issue, calling it "inconceivable" that the U.S. had been withholding munitions while Israel was engaged in a critical fight against Hamas and Hezbollah.
Republican lawmakers have also pressured the Biden administration to accelerate arms deliveries, emphasizing Israel’s need for Apache attack helicopters to counter escalating threats from Hezbollah in the north.
With regional tensions remaining high, the approval of this arms package would reinforce the strategic alliance between the U.S. and Israel, ensuring the Jewish state maintains its military edge.
