Jewish Same-Sex Marriage Advocate and Philanthropist Receive Presidential Citizens Medal from Biden
Honorees Recognized for Contributions to Equality, Education, and Social Justice.
President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal on Thursday to 20 individuals, including two notable Jewish honorees Evan Wolfson, a leading activist for marriage equality, and Bobby Sager, a philanthropist and photographer dedicated to global education and economic empowerment.
Wolfson, a lawyer who has championed same-sex marriage rights for decades, was recognized for his relentless advocacy. The White House praised his ability to not only change the law but also influence societal attitudes, describing his work as a “pioneering political playbook for change.” His efforts have inspired activists across the world fighting for equal rights.
Sager, known for his philanthropic work, has focused on creating opportunities for underserved communities, including Palestinian women artisans. His dedication to education and economic empowerment has made a global impact. In 2017, he addressed the Vilna Shul in Boston, reflecting on its role in Jewish tradition and how it continues to serve as a center for Jewish thought and action.
Among the other medal recipients were former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney and former Democratic Sens. Chris Dodd and Ted Kaufman, recognized for their leadership and commitment to democracy.
This year’s honorees reflect a broad spectrum of individuals dedicated to justice, equality, and humanitarian efforts. Their work continues to shape communities and inspire future generations.
