President Biden and Israeli President Herzog Affirm Strong US-Israel Alliance at White House Meeting
Leaders Discuss Ongoing Security Concerns, Hostage Crisis, and Regional Stability.
On Tuesday morning, Israeli President Isaac Herzog met with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, where the two leaders reaffirmed the strength of the U.S.-Israel alliance amid ongoing security concerns. Biden welcomed Herzog to the Oval Office, underscoring his administration’s “ironclad commitment to Israel” and the deep friendship shared between the two nations.
Herzog expressed gratitude for Biden’s steadfast support of Israel since the onset of the war with Hamas, noting recent attacks on Israeli citizens, including a rocket assault from Lebanon that claimed the lives of two Israelis in Nahariya earlier that day. “We’re fighting hard, protecting our people, and I know you’re working very hard to make sure this war will end,” Herzog told Biden.
The conversation also turned to the destabilizing role of Iran in the region. Herzog described Iran as “the empire of evil,” accusing it of using proxies, including Hamas and Hezbollah, to promote violence and undermine regional peace. Highlighting Iran’s ambitions to obtain nuclear weapons, Herzog affirmed that countering Tehran’s influence is crucial for Israel’s security.
Herzog also brought up the critical issue of hostages held by Hamas, including 101 Israeli captives still in Gaza. Acknowledging Biden’s commitment to their safe return, Herzog stated, “First and foremost, we have to get the hostages back home,” to which Biden replied, “I agree.” Herzog presented Biden with a symbolic gift a centuries-old artifact inscribed with the name “Joseph,” honoring the president’s role in strengthening Israel.
Following their public remarks, Herzog and Biden held a private meeting alongside top officials from both nations, including U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Israeli Ambassador Michael Herzog. The agenda included discussing steps toward regional ceasefires, Iran’s ongoing threat, and avenues for continued U.S.-Israel security cooperation.
Herzog’s visit to Washington follows his address to the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly, where he thanked the U.S. for its unwavering support in confronting Hamas. He also expressed gratitude to Vice President Kamala Harris for her strong partnership over the past four years.
Herzog’s U.S. visit continues with meetings with Representative Elise Stefanik, named by President-elect Trump as the next U.S. ambassador to the UN, and Senator Lindsey Graham, a longstanding ally of Israel. Last Thursday, Herzog called President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his recent election victory, lauding Trump’s support for Israel and his commitment to advancing peace and security across the Middle East.
The Israeli president urged Trump to prioritize efforts to secure the release of Israeli and American hostages held by Hamas. Trump assured Herzog of his continued “love and support” for Israel and his dedication to the “ironclad alliance” between the two nations. The two leaders pledged to maintain close contact to foster cooperation and stability in the region.
