Biden Announces Israel-Lebanon Truce, Hopes for Gaza Ceasefire Next

Ceasefire hailed as a step toward regional stability and broader Middle East peace.

President Joe Biden announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah on Tuesday, marking what he called a “permanent cessation of hostilities” along the Israel-Lebanon border. Under the terms of the deal, Israel will gradually withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon over the next 60 days, while Hezbollah is barred from rebuilding its military infrastructure in the region. The Lebanese army and state security forces will take control of the area.

The ceasefire, effective at 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday, will be overseen by the United States and France in collaboration with Israel and Lebanon to ensure compliance. Biden emphasized that no U.S. troops will engage in combat as part of the agreement.

“This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities,” Biden stated from the White House. “What is left of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations will not be allowed to threaten the security of Israel.”

Biden reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself if Hezbollah or any other group violates the agreement. “Let me be clear: if Hezbollah or anyone else breaks the deal and poses a direct threat to Israel, Israel retains the right to self-defense, consistent with international law,” he said.

At the same time, the president stressed that the ceasefire supports Lebanon’s sovereignty and offers a “new start” for the nation. Biden applauded leaders in both Israel and Lebanon for what he called “courageous decisions” to end the violence, noting that the truce aligns with his broader Middle East peace agenda.

Biden connected the Lebanon ceasefire to ongoing efforts to achieve a truce in Gaza and his vision for a stable and integrated Middle East. He reiterated his commitment to a two-state solution, envisioning a Palestinian state that fulfills its people’s aspirations while ensuring Israel’s security.

“Today’s announcement brings us closer to realizing the affirmative agenda that I’ve been pushing forward during my entire presidency,” Biden said, advocating for peace, prosperity, and regional cooperation. He acknowledged the suffering of people in both Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing the need to end cycles of violence and displacement.

Reflecting on the agreement, Biden expressed optimism about the potential for lasting peace. “It reminds us that peace is possible,” he said. “I’ll not for a single moment stop working to achieve it.”

The ceasefire is being lauded as a diplomatic breakthrough, with hopes it will serve as a foundation for broader regional stability. Share this article or subscribe to our newsletter for updates on this developing story and the future of Middle East peace.
