Biden Declares Hamas Weakened After Sinwar’s Death: ‘No Longer Capable of Another October 7’
U.S. President praises Israel’s elimination of Hamas leader and sees opportunity for Gaza’s future without Hamas.
President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Friday, confirming the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar following a successful Israeli operation in Gaza. Biden praised the mission, calling it a significant moment for Israel, the United States, and the world.
“Sinwar was responsible for the deaths of thousands, including Americans, and was the mastermind behind the October 7 massacres,” Biden said. Referring to the brutal attack that claimed over 1,200 lives, including 46 Americans, Biden condemned Sinwar’s role in orchestrating the atrocities and the kidnapping of civilians, calling him “the man most responsible for this and for so much of what followed.”
The President revealed that U.S. Special Operations and intelligence professionals worked closely with Israeli forces in tracking down Sinwar and other Hamas leaders. The campaign to dismantle Hamas’s leadership has been relentless, with the IDF targeting leaders hiding in Gaza’s extensive tunnel network. Biden emphasized that Sinwar’s death proves that “no terrorists anywhere in the world can escape justice, no matter how long it takes.”
Comparing the moment to the 2011 U.S. raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, Biden acknowledged the relief felt by Israelis after Sinwar’s death. “Hamas is no longer capable of carrying out another October 7,” he said, emphasizing Israel’s right to eliminate the group’s leadership.
Biden also looked forward, stating that Sinwar’s death opens the door to a future without Hamas in Gaza. “There is now the opportunity for a ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power,” he said, expressing hope for a political settlement that brings peace and stability to both Israelis and Palestinians.
Biden confirmed that he would be speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss further steps, including efforts to bring home the remaining hostages. “Much work remains before us,” he concluded.
