Israel’s Afrifah Wins Back-to-Back Euro U23 200m Titles

The 21-year-old sprinter celebrates his second consecutive gold, proudly representing Israel on the international stage.

Israeli sprinter Blessing Afrifah has once again made history, defending his European U23 200-meter championship title in Bergen, Norway. The 21-year-old, born in Israel to Ghanaian parents, stormed to victory with a time of 20.64 seconds, matching his gold-winning performance from last year.

Wrapping himself in the Israeli flag moments after his win, Afrifah expressed immense pride in representing Israel during a challenging time. “First of all, I am very, very happy,” he said. “I am happy to finish the championship with the Israeli flag on me, it is an honor for me. I am happy that I succeeded in bringing a little light, a little happiness in these difficult moments. I am truly happy. Happy to defend my title. There is no one happier than me.”

Afrifah highlighted the deeper meaning behind his victory, noting the importance of representing Israel on the global stage. “I feel I’m standing for a community. Israel is a country that [some] countries hate, so it’s an honor to represent. I want to prove [anti-Israel slander] is not true and Israel is different, and I’m proving it through sports,” he stated.

His journey to this success has not been without challenges. Before receiving Israeli citizenship, Afrifah was unable to compete internationally for Israel. “It was not easy at all. I was prevented from flying abroad and representing the Israeli national team in international competitions,” he recalled. “It was very, very difficult for me, but I really fought for it, to represent the country like I always wanted and dreamed. The citizenship brought the ‘boost’ in my career, and here I am representing the state and bringing medals like I always wanted.”

This triumph marks Afrifah’s second straight European U23 200-meter title following his win in 2023. He also rose to global prominence after winning the World Athletics U20 Championships in 2022, solidifying his place as one of Israel’s most promising track and field stars.

Afrifah’s victory not only showcases his incredible talent but also reflects the spirit and determination of Israel’s young athletes on the world stage.
