Historic $20 Million Investment by Canadian Jews to Support Northern Israel

In a historic act of philanthropy, the Jewish Federations of Canada-UIA (JFC-UIA) have announced a $20 million investment in education for northern Israel, with a primary focus on Tel-Hai College in the Galilee. The unprecedented donation marks a major step toward strengthening Israel’s northern region, an area often overshadowed by investments in the south.

Sarah Mali, JFC-UIA's Director Manager in Israel, emphasized that the majority of the funds will go toward transforming Tel-Hai College into a full-fledged university, while the remainder will support informal education initiatives.

"This is about long-term impact," Mali explained. "While much aid was given at the start of the war with good intentions, it is crucial to invest in initiatives that will foster lasting growth and development."

Traditionally, many Jewish donors have prioritized support for southern Israel. However, Mali successfully rallied a coalition of communities to invest in the North, where half of JFC-UIA's contributors have been engaged in strengthening local communities for over 30 years.

This donation marks the first time the organization has directed such a significant sum to northern Israel, reflecting a broader recognition of the region’s strategic and economic importance.

Mali highlighted the need for thoughtful philanthropy, recalling how large quantities of food donations during the early days of the war ultimately went to waste due to logistical challenges.

"Philanthropy must be done right," she said. "We want to ensure that donations contribute to something lasting education is that investment."

By supporting Tel-Hai College’s transition to university status, JFC-UIA is not only enhancing higher education opportunities but also fostering innovation, economic development, and regional stability.
