Chabad Brings Hanukkah Joy to Those Without Menorahs
Video program shares light, inspiration, and Jewish pride in places where candles can’t burn.
This Hanukkah, Chabad has found a way to share the holiday’s light with those unable to light their own menorahs. A new 40-minute video program, 8 Nights, Lights, & Insights, brings the warmth and joy of Hanukkah to hospitals, nursing homes, and other spaces where traditional candle lighting isn’t possible.
Produced by Merkos 302’s Chabad on Call, the initiative aims to ensure that the holiday’s spirit shines brightly in every setting. “Traditional candle lighting isn’t possible in many healthcare settings,” explained Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, executive director of Merkos 302 and one of the video’s presenters. “But the essence of Hanukkah the light that persists against all odds can still shine brightly in these spaces.”
The video features diverse presenters sharing messages of hope, resilience, and Jewish pride. Highlights include Fleishigs magazine editor Shifra Klein discussing the tradition of eating foods cooked in oil, IDF Sgt. First Class Yossi Bluming reflecting on the blessings of Hanukkah, and Rabbi Yehoshua Soudakoff of the Jewish Deaf Foundation signing an inspiring message: “We, each of us, really are the light ourselves.”
Children also share the uplifting message of ma’alim ba’kodesh, the Jewish value of continually increasing light and goodness in the world. Their words remind viewers that Hanukkah is a time to bring more positivity and kindness into our lives.
Although designed for healthcare environments, the program has found applications far beyond, reaching homebound individuals and anyone seeking a deeper connection to the holiday. “We’re seeing Chabad emissaries share these messages with community members who might be unable to celebrate traditionally,” said Chani Goldberg, director of Chabad on Call.
Chabad’s initiative ensures that no one misses out on Hanukkah’s warmth and meaning, spreading light and inspiration to all.
