Conservative Pro-Israel Advocate Charlie Kirk Shot Dead at Utah Event
Influential Turning Point USA founder was a vocal defender of Israel and Jewish causes before his fatal shooting at age 31.

Charlie Kirk, a high-profile conservative activist and vocal supporter of Israel, was shot and killed Wednesday during a public appearance at Utah Valley University. He was 31.
Kirk had built a national following as the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization, and as a leading voice defending Israel, often sparring with anti-Israel activists on college campuses. His killing came during one of his signature “prove me wrong” campus events a format in which he challenged students on cultural and political issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Videos of the attack show Kirk sitting under a tent when a single gunshot rang out, hitting him in the neck. Chaos erupted as bystanders screamed and fled. Despite emergency efforts, he later died at a nearby hospital. A suspect was initially detained but later released, and as of this writing, the shooter remains at large.
The event had drawn campus controversy, with nearly 1,000 signatures on a petition to bar Kirk from speaking. The university, citing First Amendment rights, defended its decision to host him.
President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death, writing, “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.” The White House convened a senior leadership team, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to respond to the shooting and reaffirm their commitment to fighting political violence.
Kirk was known for his passionate defense of Israel and the Jewish people. He visited Israel multiple times, praised Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, and regularly hosted pro-Israel voices at Turning Point USA events. He often described his support as rooted in his evangelical faith and belief in the shared values of Western civilization.
Following the October 7 Hamas massacre, Kirk amplified calls for support of Israel and warned of rising antisemitism in the West. “Jew hate has no place in civil society. It rots the brain reject it,” he posted in August.
Despite his pro-Israel stance, Kirk was not without controversy. He drew criticism even from fellow conservatives for statements that many interpreted as antisemitic, particularly about Jewish philanthropy and cultural influence. Groups like the Anti-Defamation League accused him of giving a platform to extremists, even as he insisted he was one of the Jewish community’s staunchest defenders.
Following his death, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed sorrow and admiration. “Charlie Kirk was murdered for speaking truth and defending freedom. A lion-hearted friend of Israel, he fought the lies and stood tall for Judeo-Christian civilization,” Netanyahu wrote, revealing that he had recently invited Kirk to visit Israel again.
Jewish and pro-Israel organizations also mourned Kirk’s death. The Republican Jewish Coalition called him a “shining light” in dark times, while the Zionist Organization of America’s Morton Klein recalled walking with him in Jerusalem and praised his efforts to expose the war on Israel and the Jewish people.
His murder follows a disturbing wave of violence targeting political figures and Jewish individuals in the U.S., from the killing of two Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington to a firebombing at a Colorado rally for Hamas hostages. The pattern of targeted attacks has alarmed leaders across the ideological spectrum.
Kirk’s loss will be deeply felt by supporters of Israel and religious freedom. His voice, while polarizing, remained unwavering in its defense of the Jewish state at a time when few dared to speak with such conviction.
