Defense Minister Katz Absent During IDF Strike on Houthi Targets
Katz faced criticism for leaving military HQ as Air Force launched Yemen operation.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz faced criticism for leaving the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv during the early hours of Thursday as the Israeli Air Force (IAF) carried out a high-stakes operation against Houthi targets in Yemen. According to reports from Israel’s public broadcaster, KAN News, Katz arrived at the headquarters at 9:30 p.m. to approve the mission but departed before the operation commenced.
The airstrikes targeted Houthi facilities in Yemen, including energy infrastructure in Sana’a, oil and fuel tanks, eight tugboats, and two power plants, all of which were being used for military purposes, such as smuggling Iranian weapons. The operation, which involved 14 fighter jets flying 2,000 kilometers and deploying over 60 bombs, was one of Israel’s most extensive in recent months.
KAN cited sources within the headquarters who had expected Katz to remain on-site during the operation, given its strategic significance and his prior statements emphasizing the importance of striking key targets. Katz’s office stated he left the premises for discussions at the Knesset.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded the strike, stating, “They learn and will learn the hard way that whoever harms Israel pays a heavy price.” The IDF described the operation as a direct response to ongoing Houthi aggression, including over 200 ballistic missiles and 170 drones fired at Israel, 22 of which penetrated Israeli territory.
The Houthi threat, part of Iran’s regional network of proxies, has become a growing concern for Israel, with recent missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli cities and infrastructure. Thursday’s strike marked a decisive escalation, with the military aiming to degrade Houthi capabilities and disrupt their ability to smuggle weapons.
The United States was notified of Israel’s intent to carry out the strikes, underscoring the broader international implications of Houthi aggression.
Katz’s absence during the operation drew mixed reactions. While his office defended his decision to leave, critics questioned the optics of the defense minister departing ahead of such a critical mission. With tensions running high, the situation highlights the importance of leadership during complex military operations.
