Edan Alexander, Former Hostage, Reveals Plans to Return to IDF at FIDF Gathering

Speaking at FIDF gala in New York, the Golani Brigade soldier vows to continue serving Israel after 584 days in Hamas captivity.

Edan Alexander, a Golani Brigade soldier who was held hostage in Gaza for 584 days, announced that he will return to Israel next month to resume his service in the IDF.

“Next month, God willing, I will return to Israel. I will once again put on the IDF uniform, and I will proudly serve alongside my brothers,” Alexander said on stage at the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Night to Salute Our Heroes in New York.

Addressing the sold-out crowd of 1,200, he added: “My story does not end with survival—it continues with service.”

Alexander was captured by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and freed four months ago. His remarks marked his first public appearance since his release. He thanked those who fought for his freedom and urged continued efforts to secure the release of all remaining hostages.

Maj. Gen. (Res.) Nadav Padan, CEO of FIDF, praised Alexander’s courage and dedication. “Edan’s story is a reminder of why we must continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with IDF soldiers and their families. His devotion to the State of Israel, even after enduring unimaginable hardship, is an inspiration to us all. We are profoundly grateful for Edan’s safe return, and we salute the extraordinary efforts of the IDF and the soldiers who never stop fighting to bring their brothers and sisters home.”

The gala also underscored FIDF’s pivotal role in supporting Israel’s defenders. Since October 7, the organization has mobilized more than $306 million for emergency aid, including medical supplies, rehabilitation for wounded soldiers, bereaved family support, and a landmark $118 million mental health initiative for soldiers, veterans, and families.

Alexander’s decision to return to service reflects both personal resilience and the collective spirit of Israel’s soldiers, who continue to stand on the front lines for the nation’s future.
