Egypt Proposes Five-Year Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal

New framework would see full hostage release, IDF withdrawal, and long-term truce backed by international guarantees.

Egypt has reportedly submitted a new ceasefire and hostage release proposal aimed at achieving a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas, according to sources cited by the Saudi-owned Asharq News. The proposed framework, developed in coordination with Qatar and the United States, seeks to establish a ceasefire lasting five to seven years.

The deal would involve the release of all Israeli hostages held in Gaza in exchange for a mutually agreed number of Palestinian prisoners. It would also include a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the lifting of the blockade imposed since 2007, and the beginning of a Gaza reconstruction initiative. In exchange, Hamas would commit to a five-year ceasefire and would no longer hold ruling authority over the Gaza Strip.

The agreement would be backed by regional and international guarantors to ensure the obligations of both sides are fulfilled. "Once a framework agreement is reached, the ground situation will be restored and all military operations will be halted," the report stated. Humanitarian aid would follow according to international protocols.

This development comes as Israeli officials prepare to depart for negotiations on a hostage deal. Despite ongoing talks, Hamas continues to insist that it will only accept a permanent ceasefire a condition Israel has thus far rejected.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained that Israel will only agree to temporary pauses in exchange for hostage releases. “We will not end the war until Hamas is defeated,” he has reiterated.

The proposal represents a rare alignment of interests among regional powers, the U.S., and Israel but key ideological gaps between the parties remain.
