Government Announces New Electricity Reform Saving Israelis Billions
Israelis Now Have the Power to Choose Their Electricity Supplier and Save.
In a groundbreaking move, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unveiled a new electricity reform, enabling Israeli consumers to choose their electricity supplier. Announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), this reform promises significant savings and marks a critical step toward breaking the country's electricity monopoly.
Effective from July 25, Israelis will no longer be bound to a single electricity provider. Instead, they can select from multiple suppliers, potentially reducing their annual electricity costs by 5% to 20%. This could translate to savings of hundreds or even thousands of shekels per household annually.
The Energy and Infrastructure Ministry estimates that if the maximum projected discounts are realized, consumers could collectively save up to NIS 2 billion. Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the reform is designed to lower electricity prices and save each family thousands of shekels a year.
Previously, only consumers with smart meters could switch to private electricity suppliers. The new reform extends this option to all consumers, regardless of their meter type. Companies soon available to supply electricity include Electra Power, Pazgas, Mashav Energy, Hot, Bezeq, and Cellcom, among others.
This reform not only aims to foster competition in a market worth over NIS 30 billion annually but also to empower consumers with choice and cost-saving opportunities. As Israel continues to innovate and improve its infrastructure, this move highlights the government's dedication to economic efficiency and consumer welfare.
