Erdan Criticizes Guterres Over Gaza Crisis Remarks Following Sinwar Assassination

Israel's UN Ambassador criticizes Guterres for focusing on Gaza’s humanitarian crisis without mentioning Hamas or hostages.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, sharply criticized UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his comments on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, made shortly after the announcement of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s assassination by the IDF. Guterres’s post on X (formerly Twitter) referred to Gaza's situation as "intolerable" without mentioning Sinwar’s death, Hamas’s role, or the hostages still held by the terror group.

“Alarmed by today’s IPC report findings that high displacement and restrictions on humanitarian aid flows mean people in Gaza are facing catastrophic levels of hunger,” Guterres wrote. His post was met with backlash from Israeli officials and the public alike for its perceived detachment from the ongoing conflict.

In response, Ambassador Erdan tweeted, “You are the most irrelevant and detached public figure on earth,” criticizing Guterres for focusing on Gaza's humanitarian conditions without addressing the brutality of Hamas or the significance of Sinwar's elimination.

Other social media users joined the criticism, with some sarcastically commenting on Guterres’s apparent lack of acknowledgment of Hamas’s atrocities. One user wrote, “Sorry for your loss. Losing one's pet rat must be devastating,” referencing Sinwar.

Guterres later made another post condemning attacks on UN peacekeepers as “completely unacceptable,” calling such actions potential war crimes. However, this post also sparked controversy, as many pointed out the recent discovery that Sinwar’s bodyguard was an UNRWA teacher, evidenced by his UNRWA identification found at the scene of Sinwar's death.

A verified account with nearly 200,000 followers, VividProwess, questioned, "Why was UNRWA’s teacher ID found in Sinwar’s body?" raising concerns about the involvement of international bodies in Gaza.

The exchange highlights growing tensions between Israeli officials and the United Nations, with ongoing debates over the handling of the Gaza conflict and Hamas's actions.
