Filipino Ex-Hostage Names Newborn Daughter Israela
Hebrew University researchers rewire T cells’ energy production to supercharge the immune system against tumors.

In a deeply moving gesture of love and appreciation, Filipino caregiver Jimmy (Galinor) Pacheco and his wife Clarice have named their newborn daughter Israela a name that embodies their gratitude to the State and people of Israel. Their daughter, born nearly two years after Jimmy’s release from Hamas captivity, carries with her a legacy of courage, survival, and enduring friendship.
Pacheco, now a father of four, was among the foreign nationals abducted by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023, from Kibbutz Nir Oz. At 33, he was caring for 80-year-old Amitai Ben Tzvi, who was tragically murdered during the same attack. Jimmy’s capture and 49-day ordeal in Gaza became a symbol of the indiscriminate violence that shocked Israel and the world.
He was held alongside Israelis Yarden Bibas and Ofer Kalderon in Hamas' intricate tunnel system. In these darkest days, human connection became their lifeline. “We formed an extraordinary bond,” Jimmy recalled. “When I cried, they comforted me. We sang, laughed, and even exchanged languages I taught Yarden some Filipino.”
These bonds forged in the face of terror reflect a powerful solidarity that transcends borders. Jimmy’s tribute through his daughter’s name is not just personal it’s profoundly symbolic of the alliance and warmth that exists between Israel and those who have stood with her in times of great need.
As of now, 50 hostages remain in Hamas captivity, including four foreign nationals two of whom are Thai. Israel continues to act with unwavering resolve to bring them home. Recent successes have included the release of 28 Thai hostages and the retrieval of one Thai national’s remains through a special operation.
In a recent meeting in Jerusalem, Gal Hirsch, Israel’s Coordinator for the Hostages and the Missing, reaffirmed the state’s unyielding commitment to securing the release of all captives and supporting their families. From diplomatic channels to military operations, Israel is relentless in its mission to uphold the sanctity of every life.
The story of Jimmy Pacheco is a testament to the indomitable spirit of those touched by Israel’s compassion and determination. His daughter’s name, Israela, will forever echo a message of hope, gratitude, and a deeply personal connection to the Jewish homeland.
