Former Envoy Michael Oren Joins IDF Counterterrorism Unit in the North

Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, has swapped his diplomatic attire for a military uniform. Oren has joined an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) counterterrorism unit stationed at a kibbutz in northern Israel. Oren recently returned from a trip to Washington, D.C., where he accompanied displaced Israelis from the north on a mission to secure international support. "No one is going to go back to living, say, in Metulla, which is literally a war zone with 150 houses destroyed and with Hezbollah on the other side of the fence," Oren remarked, pointing to the challenges of resettling 80,000 evacuees even in the event of a ceasefire in Gaza.

Oren argues that Israel's strategic focus should be redirected from the southern conflict in Gaza to the northern border with Lebanon, where Hezbollah poses a significant threat. He believes that Hezbollah, backed by Iran, represents a more formidable danger due to its military capabilities and continuous attacks on northern Israel. According to Oren, "We’re fighting the wrong war. We should focus our main energy on the north, which is a strategic threat."

The ongoing hostilities with Hezbollah have intensified since the outbreak of war in Gaza, with daily attacks prompting mass evacuations. Oren has also criticized international reactions to Israel's targeted assassinations of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, insisting that such actions are necessary for regional stability. "Leaders of the United States and the world should thank Israel for eliminating the murderer of not just Israelis, and of Palestinians, but the murder of Americans," Oren asserted.

Despite concerns about Israel's preparedness for a larger conflict with Hezbollah, Oren remains confident in the country's military capabilities. He hints at the availability of untapped resources that could be deployed, including the use of Israel's submarine force.

Kobi Levy, a member of the rapid response team alongside Oren, praised the former diplomat's willingness to engage with the local community and participate fully in defense efforts. Levy noted that Oren stands out among politicians for genuinely understanding the needs of northern residents, rather than offering empty promises.

"They do it with love of course, but even just the water bill is a tremendous burden on this community," Oren observed.

"I’m deeply impressed by the people here and their commitment to the north and to Israel," he said. "I’m not being sentimental; they are the embodiment of the Zionist ideal. But the sense is that they’ve been forgotten."
