Romi Gonen, Freed Hostage, Reflects "There Is Life After Death"

Survivors recount their ordeal, remind the world of those still awaiting freedom.

Romi Gonen, recently freed from Hamas captivity, shared a powerful message with the world: “There is life after death.” Her heartfelt words, posted on social media just days after her release, express deep gratitude for the prayers and support of the Israeli people and a reminder of the 94 hostages who still await freedom.

Gonen, 24, reunited with her family after 471 harrowing days in captivity. In an Instagram post, she shared a poignant image with her mother, thanking the Israeli public, her friends, and her family. “The prayers and strength you sent accompanied us the entire way and helped us believe that this nightmare would eventually end,” she wrote.

Her release, alongside Emily Damari, 28, and Doron Steinbrecher, 31, was facilitated by a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. After their return, the three women underwent medical evaluations at a reception point near the Gaza border. According to Dr. Yael Frenkel Nir of Tel Hashomer General Hospital, their physical condition was stable, allowing them to focus on reconnecting with their loved ones.

Damari also expressed profound gratitude upon her return. On Instagram, she wrote, “I have returned to life, my loved ones. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am the happiest person in the world, just to be.” Her resilience is even more remarkable given that she was injured during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on her home in Kfar Aza, where she lost two fingers.

The three women described their ordeal in a Channel 12 report. Held in underground facilities, they faced inadequate medical care, extreme uncertainty, and moments of despair. Their words serve as a stark reminder of the 94 remaining hostages, whose fates remain uncertain.

During the current ceasefire, 30 hostages are expected to be freed in the coming weeks, with another 64 slated for release in subsequent phases. The timeline for these phases has yet to be finalized, leaving many families clinging to hope for their loved ones’ safe return.

Gonen’s concluding words resonate deeply: “Am Yisrael Chai. With God’s help, we will continue to receive good news in the coming weeks.” Her strength and optimism reflect the unyielding spirit of Israel, even in the face of adversity.

Israel’s commitment to bringing every captive home underscores the unity and determination of its people. Together, they stand firm, unwavering in their pursuit of justice and peace.
