Israeli Defense Minister Outlines Gaza's Future Without Hamas
Israel explores new governance models for Gaza amidst ongoing military actions.
Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, announced on Sunday that Israel will not tolerate Hamas' rule over Gaza at any point during the efforts to conclude the war. Instead, Israel is exploring governance alternatives to the Islamist group.
"While we conduct our important military actions, the defense establishment is simultaneously assessing a governing alternative to Hamas," Gallant stated.
Gallant detailed that the Israeli military will isolate specific areas in Gaza, remove Hamas operatives, and introduce forces that will enable a new government to form—one that poses a threat to Hamas. However, he did not specify what these alternatives might entail.
Hamas, backed by Iran and committed to Israel's destruction, has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, following its parliamentary election victory and a short civil war with forces from the Palestinian Authority, which is supported by the West.
The Israeli war cabinet, which includes Gallant, was expected to convene later that day. This meeting followed a framework proposal presented by U.S. President Joe Biden for ending the Gaza conflict. While Hamas has shown preliminary support for the initiative, it has not indicated any willingness to step down or disarm.
From the IDF southern command headquarters, Gallant emphasized that Israel's military operations, combined with the establishment of potential governance alternatives, aim to dismantle Hamas' authority and facilitate the release of hostages.
"We will not accept the rule of Hamas in Gaza at any stage in any process aimed at ending the war," Gallant affirmed.
