Gallant Reveals Document Showing Hamas Commander Alerting Sinwar of Heavy Losses
Hamas commander’s letter highlights group’s diminishing capabilities and morale in Gaza
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant revealed a critical document on Wednesday from a top Hamas commander, exposing the internal struggles faced by the terror group in Gaza. The letter, written by Rafa’a Salameh, the former commander of Hamas's Khan Younis Brigade, was addressed to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and his brother Muhammad. It detailed the heavy losses Hamas has suffered in its conflict with Israel, including significant reductions in weaponry and manpower.
Salameh, one of the masterminds behind the October 7 massacre that led to the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in July, along with senior Hamas commander Muhammad Deif. In his letter, Salameh warned the Sinwar brothers of Hamas's dire situation: “We have lost 90-95% of our rocket capabilities, 60% of our personal weapons, and 65-70% of our anti-tank launchers and rockets.”
The commander also disclosed that 50% of Hamas’s fighters had either been killed or wounded, leaving the remaining forces in poor mental and physical condition. “We are left with 25%,” he wrote, adding that the surviving members were facing growing discontent from Gaza’s civilian population.
Gallant emphasized that the document illustrates “real hardship” within Hamas's ranks, adding, “Salameh cries out for help, but the Sinwar brothers cannot save him.” He vowed that Israel’s ongoing military efforts would target Hamas's leadership as well.
The revelation of the letter comes as Israel continues its military operations in Gaza, which have killed key Hamas figures involved in the October 7 attacks. On Wednesday, the IDF also reported an airstrike on a Hamas command room embedded within a former school, used as a shelter for displaced Gazans. Despite efforts to minimize civilian casualties, hospital officials reported 14 deaths in the strike.
Gallant also released a video on Wednesday showing a photo of Muhammad Sinwar’s children posing in front of a depiction of the 9/11 attacks, which was found in a Hamas tunnel under Khan Younis. This was revealed on the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, further illustrating the group's glorification of violence.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) continue to target Hamas operatives and infrastructure in Gaza. In recent strikes, they eliminated two terrorists involved in the October 7 attacks, one of whom had guarded abducted soldier Cpl. Noa Marciano before her death at Shifa Hospital.
The ongoing conflict has taken a heavy toll, with 97 of the 251 hostages captured by Hamas on October 7 still being held in Gaza, including the bodies of 33 confirmed dead by the IDF. Israel remains committed to recovering its citizens while combating Hamas forces, which continue to use civilians as human shields in the densely populated Gaza Strip.
Israel’s military operations, which aim to dismantle Hamas’s terrorist infrastructure, have resulted in the deaths of over 17,000 Hamas combatants. The conflict has claimed the lives of 344 Israeli soldiers and has caused significant civilian casualties in Gaza, though the exact numbers remain contested.
As Israel’s ground offensive against Hamas continues, Gallant’s disclosure underscores the weakening position of the terror group, while Israel pushes forward in its mission to eradicate the threat posed by Hamas.
