Man Arrested After Synagogue Fire and Nazi Salute in Germany

A shocking antisemitic attack outside a Giessen synagogue underscores rising threats to Jewish communities.

In the German city of Giessen, a man was arrested after setting fire to the entrance of a synagogue and making a Nazi salute, in what local authorities and Jewish leaders are calling a disturbing antisemitic attack. The incident happened late Friday evening and has reignited urgent discussions about the safety of Jewish institutions in Germany and across Europe.

Around 8:35 p.m., emergency services were alerted to flames at the main entrance of the Giessen synagogue. Security footage reviewed by investigators shows a 32-year-old suspect approaching the building, splashing what appeared to be an accelerant near the entrance, and lighting it. In the moments before the fire took hold, the video records him making a Nazi salute.

Firefighters arrived quickly and were able to extinguish the flames before they spread inside the synagogue. The fire did scorch some exterior surfaces, including a rolling shutter and the front gate, as it spread to nearby paper containers stored outside. Thankfully, no one was injured.

Police detained the suspect near the synagogue shortly after the fire was reported. Authorities say initial findings indicate he acted alone, though they continue to investigate his motives and background. The total extent of the damage is still being assessed.

The attack drew an immediate reaction from Jewish leaders in Giessen. Lawrence de Donges, deputy head of the Jewish community there, sharply criticized what he described as insufficient action from authorities in combating antisemitism and protecting Jewish life.

“An arson attempt occurred Friday night at our synagogue in Giessen,” he said. “We are requesting the interior minister’s help. What do we get besides hot air? Nothing! They wrap the fight against antisemitism, racism, and homophobia in warm words, but there are no actions. It looks like we are returning to 1933.”

German officials have been warning for months about growing assaults on Jewish institutions amid heightened tensions in the country. As investigators work to determine whether additional charges are warranted, police continue to treat the case as potentially linked to wider extremist patterns.

This attack is a stark reminder that antisemitism still poses a real threat in the heart of Europe.
