Haifa Beach Transforms into Sanctuary for Endangered Atlantic Guitarfish
Study reveals coastal strip as critical habitat for guitarfish survival
A beach in Haifa has become a critical sanctuary for the endangered Atlantic guitarfish, providing hope for the species whose population has been decimated by overfishing. A study by the Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa has identified the coastal strip between Ma’agan Michael and Dor Beach as a natural nursery habitat for the distinctive cartilaginous fish.
Researchers observed that between August and November, the area becomes a gathering spot for juvenile guitarfish. These unique, flat-bodied fish are under severe threat in the Mediterranean, where they are among the vertebrate groups at highest risk of extinction. Einav Cohen, a doctoral candidate and one of the study’s authors, explained the importance of the habitat: "Nursery habitats enhance the survival of young animals by providing food, protection from predators, and shelter from environmental factors."
The Atlantic guitarfish is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with populations rapidly declining due to commercial fishing. However, the discovery of this beach as a potential nursery offers a glimmer of hope. The location fits all criteria for a nursery: juvenile guitarfish gather, remain for extended periods, and return annually.
Researchers are now advocating for this area to be designated as a wildlife preserve, which would protect the species during its vulnerable early life stages. "We hope this area will be recognized as a nature reserve to ensure the guitarfish's survival," Cohen said.
With its natural suitability and strategic protection, Haifa’s beach may play a key role in the recovery of the endangered Atlantic guitarfish population.
