Hamas Dominates Gaza's Economy and Humanitarian Aid
Amidst conflict, control over financial and aid resources underscores deeper challenges
Hamas’ grip on Gaza extends beyond military operations to include significant control over economic and humanitarian mechanisms. This influence affects everyday life profoundly, as highlighted by recent reports from Gaza itself.
A reporter from Official PA TV in Gaza narrated the desperate situation for residents in Deir Al-Balah, where Hamas allegedly monopolizes ATM access, effectively controlling the distribution of cash. This has left many unable to withdraw their own salaries, as "the people with influence" treat the ATMs as "their family’s private property." The lack of available cash has made it impossible for many residents to purchase basic necessities, despite their availability at reasonable prices in the market.
The control exerted by Hamas extends to humanitarian aid as well. It is reported that although over 150 aid trucks arrive daily in Gaza, only about 20 trucks' worth of supplies actually reach the general population. The rest, according to the PA TV report, are commandeered by those in power within Hamas, who decide their destinations and recipients, ensuring that the aid does not reach those most in need.
These instances of control over financial and humanitarian resources are part of a broader pattern of behavior by Hamas. During the conflict in October 2023, Hamas launched a brutal attack against Israeli civilians, leading to significant casualties. In response, Israel initiated the Swords of Iron War to counter the ongoing terror threat, including rocket attacks and ground assaults by Hamas, which were supported at times by Hezbollah from Lebanon.
The war saw temporary ceasefires and prisoner exchanges, yet violations of these agreements led to further escalations. Amidst this tumultuous backdrop, the control over economic and humanitarian channels by Hamas highlights a grim reality for Gaza’s residents, who find themselves caught between the dire needs of daily survival and the broader strategies of conflict.
As we reflect on the situation in Gaza and the complexities of the region, it’s crucial to stay informed and to support efforts that promote peace and provide direct assistance to those affected by the conflict.
