Herzog Hosts West African Muslim Leaders to Promote Israel-Africa Cooperation
Delegation of imams from five nations visits Jerusalem in interfaith mission aimed at strengthening ties.

President Isaac Herzog welcomed a delegation of senior Muslim religious leaders from five West African countries to Jerusalem on Monday, using the visit to foster interfaith cooperation and highlight Israel’s growing partnerships across Africa.
The delegation, organized by Israel’s Foreign Ministry, included imams and community leaders from Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, and Togo. Their mission, described as both spiritual and practical, aims to promote closer ties between Muslim communities in Africa and the State of Israel.
During the meeting at the President’s Residence, Herzog emphasized the importance of firsthand experiences, particularly in combating misinformation and distorted narratives about Israel abroad.
“Your presence here sends a big message from the Muslim communities of Africa,” Herzog said. “We are very honored to have you here.”
Delegates spoke warmly about their emotional visits to Islamic sites in Jerusalem and pledged to share their experiences with their communities back home. They described the journey as a powerful step toward interfaith understanding and practical regional cooperation.
The meeting comes amid renewed diplomatic outreach by Israel to Africa. Herzog referenced his recent visit to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, underscoring Israel’s long-term commitment to partnerships across the continent.
The president also cited recent political developments, including the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution that he called “historic.” He credited former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration for helping secure cooperation from moderate Muslim governments that led to the release of Israeli hostages and is now shaping a post-Hamas governance plan for Gaza.
Herzog expressed hope that Africa could play a bridge-building role in regional peace efforts, saying, “Israel wants to contribute to a better world including in Africa.” Share this article or subscribe to our newsletter for updates.
