Herzog to Visit Australia in Wake of Bondi Beach Tragedy

President Isaac Herzog is set to make a historic visit to Australia next month, demonstrating Israel’s enduring commitment to Jewish communities worldwide. Departing on February 8 and returning February 12, Herzog’s trip follows a tragic terror attack that shook the Australian Jewish community during Hanukkah at Bondi Beach, claiming 15 lives and injuring hundreds.

Invited jointly by Australia’s Governor-General, the Prime Minister, and Jewish community leaders, Herzog’s journey is a message of unity and support. His itinerary includes meetings with bereaved families, victims, and survivors of the December massacre that targeted innocent Jews as they celebrated the Festival of Lights.

Herzog will be accompanied by a high-level solidarity delegation representing Israel’s core national institutions. Among them are Yaakov Hagoel, Chairman of the World Zionist Organization, and Maj.-Gen. (res.) Doron Almog, Chairman of the Jewish Agency. Their presence reflects the broader Israeli effort to reinforce the safety, identity, and strength of Jewish life abroad, especially as antisemitic incidents rise globally including in Australia.

Beyond the memorial and community solidarity aspects, Herzog’s visit will include discussions with Australian government officials, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Governor-General David Hurley. He will also engage with leaders across the political spectrum, underscoring the importance of bipartisan support in combating hate and fostering mutual understanding.

The president’s visit comes nearly six weeks after the invitation was extended by Prime Minister Albanese. Herzog had swiftly condemned the Bondi Beach massacre, describing it as "a very cruel attack on Jews who went to light the first candle of Hanukkah." His early call for Australia to intensify its efforts against the surge in antisemitism remains central to his upcoming talks.

As Herzog brings a message of strength and unity from Jerusalem to Sydney, this visit highlights Israel’s unwavering dedication to Jewish communities everywhere, and the enduring connection between the State of Israel and the Jewish people no matter where they live.
