Herzog Lights Eighth Chanukah Candle with Freed Hostages
Israeli President Calls for the Return of Captives Held in Gaza.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog marked the eighth night of Chanukah in a deeply emotional ceremony at Kibbutz Hatzerim, west of Beersheva, where they lit the menorah alongside former Hamas hostages. Among those present were Shoshan Haran, Shiri Weiss, Raaya Rotem, and Raz Ben-Ami Israelis who recently returned home after weeks in captivity.
The gathering was also attended by the families of those still held by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza, as well as residents of Kibbutz Be’eri, many of whom remain displaced following the October 7 attack.
Addressing the crowd, Herzog spoke from the heart, acknowledging the pain of those still waiting for the return of their loved ones. “I come here as president of the State of Israel on Chanukah to light the eighth candle and to say a few words to you, to ask for forgiveness, to offer words of encouragement, comfort, and hope,” he said.
The president reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to bringing every captive home, either for recovery in the arms of their families or for a proper burial in their homeland. “The entire people of Israel want to see them home as quickly as possible. We pray that the eighth Chanukah candle will bring wonderful news, and with God’s help, may we soon see them home,” he added.
The lighting of the final Chanukah candle in Hatzerim was a poignant reminder of the resilience of the Israeli people and their unwavering hope. As the menorah shone brightly, it symbolized the collective determination to overcome darkness and stand united in the face of adversity.
