Herzog to Award October 7 Civilian Heroes with Israel’s Highest Honor
New civilian award to recognize bravery during the Hamas attack.
In a historic first, Israeli President Isaac Herzog will honor civilians who demonstrated extraordinary heroism during the October 7 Hamas attack with the country’s highest civilian award. The special awards ceremony, set to take place at the President’s Residence on October 30, will recognize those who risked or sacrificed their lives to protect others during the brutal invasion.
Herzog announced the new awards after hearing stories of civilians who fought off Hamas terrorists or helped rescue neighbors and loved ones, often with little more than handguns. Many of these brave individuals lost their lives in the process, but their courageous actions have become a source of pride and inspiration for the Israeli people.
Most of the awards will be conferred posthumously, providing some solace to bereaved families by acknowledging that heroism is not exclusive to those in uniform. Herzog sees these awards as a crucial step in honoring the extraordinary bravery and selflessness of civilians who defended their communities in the face of unimaginable danger.
Among the recipients are Moshe and Eliad Ohayon of Ofakim, Yosef Azniedna, Leon Bar and his son Omer, Tali Hadad, and many others who demonstrated remarkable courage. In a special category for child heroism, the children of the Idan family, the Tassa children from Netiv Ha’asara, and the Suissa daughters from Sderot will also be honored.
By awarding these civilians, Herzog aims to celebrate the strength and unity of the Israeli people, ensuring their bravery is remembered and their actions are a beacon of hope for the nation.
