Israeli President Herzog Honors Shabbat by Walking Back from Olympic Event

Herzog Upholds Shabbat Observance During Paris Olympics Visit.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is set to embark on a diplomatic visit to Italy and France on Wednesday, culminating in his attendance at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In a gesture of religious observance, Herzog plans to return from the ceremony on foot to honor the sanctity of Shabbat, which begins on Friday night.

The Hebrew-language Kipa newspaper reported that Herzog and his wife will walk back from the Olympic opening ceremony to respect the holiness of Shabbat. This decision underscores Herzog's commitment to his faith even while participating in significant international events.

During his visit to the Olympic village, Herzog will join members of the Israeli Olympic delegation in a ceremony to honor the Israeli athletes who were murdered during the 1972 Munich Olympics. Additionally, he will affix a mezuzah in their memory, further commemorating their legacy.

President Herzog emphasized the importance of Israel's presence on the global stage, especially during challenging times. “We are in the midst of a difficult and painful war, which is also reflected on the international stage,” Herzog stated. “At this time, it is especially important for the State of Israel to take our place resolutely and appear on every global stage, and particularly on such an important stage as the Olympics.”

Herzog's actions highlight the balance between national representation and personal religious observance, showcasing a profound respect for tradition while engaging in international diplomacy.
