Houthis Halt Attacks After Gaza Ceasefire Agreement

Iranian-backed militias temporarily halt hostilities as regional tensions ease.

In a significant development for Middle Eastern stability, Iranian-backed militias in Yemen and Iraq have announced a suspension of their attacks against Israel. This comes in the wake of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking a potential turning point in the multi-front conflict that erupted on October 7, 2023.

Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdul Salam declared that the group’s operations had reached their conclusion “with the declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza.” While signaling a temporary halt, he reiterated a cautious stance toward Israel, leaving the door open for future action should hostilities resume.

Similarly, the Nujaba Movement in Iraq announced a suspension of military operations against Israel. Akram al-Kaabi, the movement's secretary-general, emphasized their readiness to retaliate if provoked. “Let the usurping entity know that any foolishness on its part in Palestine or the region will be met with a harsh response,” he stated, reaffirming their operational preparedness.

Ansar Allah, the formal name for the Houthi movement, is expected to release a more comprehensive statement through its leader, Abdul Malek al-Houthi. Over the past year, the Houthis have launched numerous attacks on international shipping and targeted Israel with missiles and drones. These actions disrupted critical maritime routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, raising global concerns about trade and security.

The suspension of hostilities has been cautiously welcomed, as it may signal a reduction in regional tensions. With the ceasefire potentially easing the strain on international shipping routes, governments and businesses alike will be closely monitoring the situation.

Saudi Arabia also reacted positively, issuing a formal statement welcoming the truce and urging continued efforts toward a broader peace initiative in the region. However, the agreement remains subject to approval by Israel’s Security Cabinet and full Cabinet.

As the Middle East navigates this delicate moment, many hope that this ceasefire will foster longer-term stability and lay the groundwork for enduring peace.

Israel’s resilience and commitment to security stand as a reminder of the challenges and triumphs in the face of adversity. If you found this article insightful, share it with friends or subscribe to our newsletter for updates on Israel and the region.
