Israel Becomes First to Convert Boeing 777 into Cargo Aircraft

IAI’s groundbreaking freighter conversion sets new global standard for air cargo capacity and efficiency.

In a world-first achievement, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has successfully converted a Boeing 777-300ER passenger jet into a state-of-the-art freighter, marking a historic milestone in aviation engineering and global logistics. Announced in Tel Aviv, the new 777-300ERSF has received full certification from both the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAI).

Dubbed a potential game-changer for the global freight market, the converted aircraft is capable of transporting up to 100 tons of cargo. Its blend of size, fuel efficiency, and cost-effectiveness is expected to make it a top choice for major cargo operators worldwide.

“This is a proud moment for IAI,” said Boaz Levy, the company’s president and CEO. “Being the first in the world to convert a Boeing 777 into a freighter highlights our technological leadership. This project reflects our professionalism and determination, and it will help support the future of global e-commerce.”

The first aircraft will be operated by Kalitta Air, with AerCap as the launch customer—both major players in the international freight industry. IAI’s Executive Vice President, Yaacov Berkovitz, called the milestone the result of years of engineering expertise and collaboration. “This aircraft sets a new standard in air cargo with its unmatched payload capacity and efficiency,” he said. “We believe it will quickly become the preferred choice for international carriers.”

IAI is no stranger to innovation in aviation. Already a global leader in passenger-to-freighter conversions, the Israeli firm has worked with logistics giants like Amazon and DHL. With demand for cargo transport soaring, IAI is expanding its network of conversion facilities worldwide, bolstering Israel’s reputation as a technological powerhouse.

This latest breakthrough places Israel at the cutting edge of aviation advancement and underscores the country's capacity to solve complex engineering challenges that meet global needs.
