IDF Chief Herzi Halevi to Resign in March

Halevi cites responsibility for October 7 attacks in decision to step down.

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi has announced his intention to step down in March 2025, citing his responsibility for the IDF’s shortcomings during the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel. Halevi’s resignation was conveyed in a letter to Defense Minister Israel Katz and reported by Hebrew media on Tuesday.

The October 7 assault, the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, resulted in the loss of over 1,200 lives and saw 251 individuals taken hostage. Halevi, who assumed his role in January 2023, stated that his decision reflects accountability for the military’s failure to prevent and adequately respond to the unprecedented terror attack.

“At this juncture, when the IDF has recorded significant achievements and is in the process of implementing a deal to release the hostages, I request to end my position on March 6, 2025,” Halevi wrote. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring a smooth and thorough transition to his successor.

Halevi’s tenure, now set to end after just over two years, will make him the third-shortest-serving permanent IDF chief of staff, following Dan Halutz, who resigned after the 2006 Lebanon War. According to reports, Halevi timed his departure to coincide with the conclusion of the first phase of the current hostage agreement with Hamas, which is expected to last until March 1.

The October 7 tragedy exposed critical lapses in Israel’s military intelligence and preparedness, prompting widespread criticism and a wave of resignations among senior IDF officials. The attack triggered a multi-front war against Iranian proxies and allied militants, further complicating Israel’s security landscape.

Despite these challenges, Halevi noted that the IDF had achieved substantial gains in the ongoing conflict and underscored the importance of staying the course during this tumultuous period.

The announcement has sparked discussions about leadership and accountability within Israel’s defense establishment. As the IDF continues its mission to bring hostages home and restore security, Halevi’s departure marks a significant chapter in Israel’s ongoing struggle against terrorism.
