New IDF Chief Zamir Issues First Order Focused on Victory
Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir pledges to defeat Israel’s enemies and bring hostages home.

Victory and the defeat of Israel’s enemies are the core mission of the Israel Defense Forces, new IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir declared in his first official order following his swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday.
"Enemies near and far have sought to destroy us. They mistakenly believed that our spirit was weak and our ranks were fractured," Zamir wrote, addressing the soldiers of the IDF. Acknowledging the failures of October 7, he stated, “The Israel Defense Forces did not fulfill its mission on October 7. We will not hide it, nor will we cover it up.”
However, he emphasized the IDF’s swift response and resilience. “From the depths, filled with courage our people rose, our army stood up, you stood up and struck back. From here, our focus is set in one direction victory and the defeat of the enemy! This is our mission, this is our purpose.”
Zamir’s message was clear: the IDF will not rest until all hostages taken by Hamas are returned. “We will not rest until our brothers return from the tunnels of captivit this is our moral duty,” he declared.
To the soldiers of the IDF, he pledged his full support. “I will set high expectations for you, but at the same time, I will stand resolutely behind each and every one of you and provide you with the tools to win.” He acknowledged the hardships ahead but also the hope that fuels Israel’s strength. “A remarkable nation, torn between tears and hope, looks to us.”
Zamir assumed his new role in a ceremony in Tel Aviv, replacing outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, who resigned following the failures of October 7. On his first day, Zamir is expected to visit residents near the Gaza border an immediate signal of his commitment to those most affected by the war.
