IDF Denies WHO Allegations of Attack on Staff in Deir al-Balah
Israeli military says operations were coordinated with international groups and aimed at neutralizing terrorist threats.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) firmly rejected claims by the World Health Organization (WHO) that Israeli soldiers attacked the agency’s staff and facilities in Deir al-Balah, Gaza. On Tuesday, the IDF stated that no WHO personnel were harmed and that evacuations in the area were carried out in coordination with international organizations.
The WHO had alleged that its staff residence and main warehouse in Deir al-Balah were struck three times during Israeli operations on Monday, causing fires, severe damage, and endangering the lives of staff and their families, including children. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for the immediate release of a staff member reportedly detained by Israeli forces.
In response, the IDF clarified that its soldiers were responding to gunfire directed at them from the area. “The IDF returned fire at the location from which shots were fired,” the military said, explaining that several individuals suspected of terrorist activity were detained, questioned in the field, and the majority were later released in coordination with international agencies.
The IDF also addressed WHO’s claims regarding the treatment of detainees. “During field questioning, it is sometimes necessary to temporarily remove some clothing to ensure that individuals are not armed or wearing explosive belts,” the military stated. The IDF stressed that civilians were warned to evacuate the area prior to operations and that discussions with international organizations were ongoing throughout the mission.
According to the IDF, the evacuation of international staff was conducted safely and in coordination with the military. “The IDF is in constant communication with international groups to ensure their safety while countering terrorist threats,” the statement added.
As tensions in Gaza remain high, Israel continues to emphasize its commitment to minimizing harm to civilians and international personnel while targeting terrorist infrastructure.
