Israeli Forces Working Around the Clock to Destroy Weapons in Syria

Israeli Troops Target Former Assad Regime Arms to Protect Golan Heights.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are conducting relentless operations in Syria’s buffer zone to destroy weapons left behind by the former Assad regime, which the military says pose a threat to Israel’s security. The IDF announced on Monday that soldiers from the 474th Golan Regional Brigade of the 210th “Bashan” Division have carried out dozens of targeted raids, locating, confiscating, and destroying a wide range of weaponry.

“We are conducting operations day and night,” said Lt. Col. H., battalion commander of the 474th Brigade. “In an activity we conducted tonight, we found weapons inside one of the houses, and this is connected to a series of operations in which we also found missiles, explosives, and mines, as well as explosive devices, tanks, and armored personnel carriers, which we also blew up and destroyed.”

The mission’s primary goal is to safeguard the residents of the southern Golan Heights and the broader State of Israel. Recent operations have uncovered rifles, ammunition, and other military equipment abandoned by the former Syrian Armed Forces.

On January 15, the IDF disclosed that it had seized over 3,000 weapons and related equipment that once belonged to Bashar Assad’s military. Since the fall of the Iranian- and Russian-backed Assad regime, Israeli forces have taken strategic positions both within and beyond the Golan buffer zone, including on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.

The Israeli Air Force has also conducted hundreds of strikes on former Assad military assets to prevent them from being captured by hostile groups. Israel’s actions aim to prevent advanced weaponry from falling into the hands of extremist factions operating in the region.

Meanwhile, Ahmed al-Sharaa, head of Syria’s Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group and the nation’s de facto leader, has called on the U.S. to pressure Israel to withdraw from the Golan buffer zone and the summit of Mount Hermon.

Despite international calls for withdrawal, Israel remains committed to its defensive strategy, emphasizing the need to maintain security along its northern border and prevent threats from emerging in the power vacuum left by the Assad regime.
