IDF Destroys Hamas Tunnel in Beit Hanun Used in 2014 Deadly Ambush
Unit dismantles terror route tied to the deaths of four IDF soldiers during Operation Protective Edge.
In a significant operation this week, IDF forces demolished a kilometer-long Hamas terror tunnel in Gaza’s Beit Hanun, the same tunnel used in the deadly 2014 ambush that claimed the lives of four Israeli soldiers during Operation Protective Edge.
The operation was led by the Netzach Yehuda Battalion in cooperation with elite Yahalom combat engineering units. The tunnel, long embedded in Israel’s national memory as a symbol of Hamas’s subterranean warfare, was finally neutralized after years of intelligence gathering and operational planning.
The 2014 attack, executed through this tunnel, killed Lt.-Col. Dolev Kedar, Sec.-Lt. Yuval Haiman, CWO Baynesian Kasahun, and Sgt. Nadav Goldmacher. Their names are etched in the collective Israeli consciousness as heroes lost in a brutal and unexpected ambush.
The IDF also confirmed the destruction of dozens of other terror-related sites during the broader operation and reported the elimination of multiple terrorists, though exact numbers were not released.
This action is part of Israel’s ongoing campaign to dismantle Hamas’s extensive tunnel network beneath the Gaza Strip. Earlier this month, a separate tunnel near Khan Yunis’s European Hospital was sealed by Golani Brigade engineers and Yahalom specialists. That tunnel was reportedly used by senior Hamas military wing commander Mohammed Sinwar, who was later eliminated.
The IDF’s continued focus on tunnel warfare highlights the persistent threat posed by Hamas’s underground infrastructure. These covert networks have been used for smuggling, ambushes, and cross-border attacks, often with deadly consequences for both soldiers and civilians.
