IDF Leverages Advanced Digital Systems in ‘First Technological War’
Cutting-edge innovations enhance coordination and battlefield effectiveness in multi-branch warfare.
During the ongoing "Swords of Iron" war, technology has played a pivotal role in the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) operations, revolutionizing how combat is managed and ground forces are supported. The IDF’s Southern Command has been at the forefront of these advancements, pioneering data-driven systems that have transformed battlefield capabilities.
Lt. Col. Alex Lidogoster, commander of the Southern Command’s Big Data Unit, highlighted the command’s focus on data utilization. "The Southern Command is a pioneer among the regional commands in these fields," Lidogoster said. "We achieved dozens of outcomes, including advancements in data collection and organization."
One key innovation is the Golden Clock, a system designed to reduce the time it takes to evacuate wounded soldiers. "We named it the Golden Clock after the 'golden hour' the critical 60 minutes in which a wounded soldier needs to reach the emergency room," Lidogoster explained. Initially, evacuation times exceeded two hours, but after a year of war, the average time has been reduced to about an hour, a significant improvement that has saved lives.
Another technological leap came in the form of the Operational Safety Product, designed to reduce friendly fire incidents and other safety issues during combat. This digital system has provided commanders with real-time data on operational safety trends, leading to a marked reduction in such incidents.
A third project emerged following the capture of the Coordination and Liaison Administration near the Erez Crossing. The system now manages humanitarian aid entering Gaza, facilitating communication between Israeli forces and international organizations like the United Nations. It was even used to provide evidence to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, showcasing Israel’s commitment to controlled and lawful operations.
The Southern Command also addressed the critical role of reservists, creating a digital portal to bridge the knowledge gap between regular and reserve forces. The portal centralizes all digital tools, allowing reservists to quickly access training materials, operational guides, and key systems. This innovation has streamlined the integration of reserve forces, ensuring they remain up-to-date with new technologies.
Captain Dror, head of the operational chat platform in the Matzpen Unit, highlighted the importance of digital communication systems. "The operational chat is much like WhatsApp but operates on the most secure military network," Dror explained. This platform facilitates seamless communication between the IDF's branches, including the Air Force, Navy, Ground Forces, and Intelligence. Its simplicity and speed have significantly enhanced coordination in multi-branch operations.
The Matzpen Unit has also developed real-time spatial awareness tools that alert soldiers to risks and threats directly on their military cell phones. This cutting-edge technology has integrated into every facet of the IDF's operational processes, allowing for quicker decision-making and more precise combat maneuvers.
Dror emphasized that the war has demonstrated the importance of rapid adaptability. "October 7 caught us by surprise. By 6:29 a.m., most of the products we had been developing became irrelevant. We had to reinvent ourselves, but we came in with many tools and knew how to strengthen our technological advantage."
Lidogoster concluded by praising the soldiers and reservists who contributed to these technological advancements. "There’s a real ecosystem here. Without this collaboration, we wouldn’t be able to succeed."
As the IDF continues to navigate the complexities of modern warfare, these technological innovations are not only enhancing battlefield effectiveness but also shaping the future of military operations.
